I know this is more of a boy thing but I wanted to know what if any of you have taught your children about guns. Avery went to a birthday party for a friend (a boy). He had lots of play guns and some of the kids were running around shooting each other. Avery joined in.
I've heard moms say that there is no way getting around guns with boys because even if you do not buy toy guns they'll end up using a stick or their fingers. (which Avery did when she got home) I believe that's true, they find a way.
What concerns me is when you can not tell the difference between real and fake guns. And kids don't understand the concept that there is a difference. And a majority of American's own a gun, especially here in Texas. So what do you do?

You keep it locked and the bullets in a seperate place. My husband owns about 4 guns and Braydon has no clue where they are...better yet...neither do I since they are for hunting purposes only. I have asked him to place them in the attic, which I think he has but they are outta sight, outta mind!! I for one am not a gun lover. I didn't grow up with them in my home but married a guy who loves them. He can love them on camping trips with "the boys" but that is it!!! Otherwise they are hidden and locked!
Braydon is our 3 year old....sorry!!!
My husband is a hunter. He likes guns and has several. My son, who is 5, knows what they are and what they are used for. My husband teaches very strict gun safety. Tyler knows that they are for hunting and not for killing people. If I see Tyler using his fingers as a gun and pretending to shoot people, I let him know that is not nice, playing or not. With all that being said, gun safety and even gun "manners" can be taught just like teaching table manners. You state what is expected and follow through.
Just to let you, we do not have them out where the children can get them. They are placed out of reach.
Respect, respect, respect!!! That is the key. You have to learn to respect guns. I grew up with them, knew where they were kept (bullets were in a separate place, though) and I was very well aware of what happens when you shoot a gun. Kids do not need to fear them, but respect them. I do not own any, but would not mind having a handgun. I am a believer in "guns do not kill people, people kill people." Unfortunately, accidents happen, so, as parents, it is our responsibility to do what we can to prevent that, like Maren said, keep them where there is no way a child could ever get to them. Good luck, Mary!
